Methodology
Since 2004, the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has been compiling the QS World University Rankings, which is one of the most widely recognized and utilized university rankings globally, alongside the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Times Magazine.
In response to the growing need for detailed studies enabling institutional comparison at the discipline level, QS has been producing university rankings by subject (QS World University Rankings® by Subject) since 2011. The 14th version of this study was published on April 10, 2024.
The 2024 edition of the ranking measures 55 specific disciplines grouped into 5 major academic areas: Arts and Humanities; Engineering and Technology; Life Sciences and Medicine; Natural Sciences; Social Sciences and Management.
The ranking includes the top universities in the world for each of these disciplines (between 20 and 720 institutions are included in each ranking, depending on the discipline). In summary, the study entails the creation of 55 distinct rankings, one for each of the disciplines under consideration. Additionally, QS conducts rankings for the 5 major academic areas mentioned previously.
